In Benin, child marriage remains a prevalent and harmful practice, threatening the lives, wellbeing, and prospects of many young Beninese girls.
Although child marriage was nationally prohibited in 2004 , according to the country’ s Fifth Demographic and Health Survey for 2017 -2018 , 9 per cent of girls are married before the age of 15 , and 31 per cent of girls are married before the age of 18 years.
To address the problem of child marriage, UNICEF Benin commissioned EPRI to undertake a feasibility study for a cash plus care programme to end child marriage and to conduct an institutional needs assessment of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Microfinance tasked with its oversight and implementation.
EPRI developed the programme design, informed by the feasibility study, accompanied by an institutional needs assessment and capacity development plan for the Ministry.
