EPRI is working with UNICEF Tanzania, the national Government of Tanzania, as well as the Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) and the Zanzibar Planning Commission (ZPC) to conduct rigorous assessments of the implications of the demographic transition and the status of service delivery (and associated public investments) in Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania.
The relationship between population growth and economic development has been a topic studied for decades, however, the nature of this relationship is highly context specific and hence further evidence is needed to define how Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar can reap the benefits of the demographic dividend with investments in relevant sectors.
EPRI has been conducting separate demographic dividend analysis for Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, focusing on investments in education, health, infrastructure, and social development. The two analyses will result in strategic options to inform policymakers to harness and capitalise on the country’s demographic transition most effectively; thereby, enabling pathways to further economic growth and supporting Tanzania’s and Zanzibar’s progress towards long-term development goals.
By the end of 2021, the demographic dividend analysis for Zanzibar has been finalised and presented to stakeholders in the region, while the analysis for Mainland Tanzania will be continued and finalised in the first quarter of 2022.
