EPRI has been commissioned to UNICEF South Africa for the study on exclusion error rate for children who are recipients of the Child Support Grant. The Child Support Grant (CSG) was first introduced in 1998 as an important instrument of social protection in South Africa. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the most successful instruments for addressing child poverty. A 2012 impact assessment identifies the positive developmental impact of the CSG in promoting nutritional, educational and health outcomes. Early and continued receipt of the CSG increases the developmental effects of the grant. Despite the steady expansion of the CSG over the years, studies conducted highlight that many vulnerable children continue to be excluded. This study, examines trends in exclusion of eligible caregivers and children from the CSG, analysing the reasons that drive incorrect exclusion from the grant. The analysis of exclusion will help inform the implementation of actions to remove access barriers and increase uptake the CSG’s uptake.
